Our Story

The idea for Canopy Children’s Nurseries was sown two decades ago when our founder, Sarah Charles, was researching childcare for her own babies and decided to create the nursery that she dreamed of. Since then she has cultivated 3 nurseries in the Solihull area where the common theme has been a culture of excellence and a celebration of the magic moments in childhood.

Sarah and her hand-picked team have used their extensive knowledge and experience to develop Canopy Children’s Nurseries so that more discerning parents across the country will have the chance to see their children blossom and reach their potential in our exceptional environments.

Our mission is to disrupt the landscape of childcare provision, giving children the power to change the world in their own unique ways

Canopy Code

Canopy Code is the curriculum we embrace in every canopy Nursery. Put simply, its the skills and behaviours we want children to learn to make them equipped and ready for their next steps. We want our children to be curious explorers, confident communicators, independent learners and inquisitive thinkers. With these skills firmly embedded, they will be fully equipped and ready for the next step into ‘big school’.

Canopy Cares

Canopy Cares sits alongside the Canopy Code to purposefully cultivate a culture of sustainability and appreciation for the living world. Quite simply, our ethos is caring for each other and the world we live in. We teach children tolerance, respect, and kindness along with a sense of understanding and responsibility for our beautiful planet.

Children are actively involved in caring for the environment and our nurseries have eco committees to help children think about their impact on the natural world.

The very name of ‘Canopy’ is derived from how we view the development of babies and young children:

They must start with strong roots in their personal, social and emotional development. Only when they feel settled, secure and bonded with their carers will they be ready to learn.

The trunk or stem of learning is provided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which is followed by all nurseries and preschools in England. This is a strong, mutually supportive combination of seven key areas of learning; communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design.

The branches of a tree mirrors how we take these seven areas and build on them to follow a rich and ever-changing curriculum which stretches in different directions depending upon the influences of individual children and families. We are not rigid in our approach but enable children to follow their own interests, branching in their own direction, supported by skilful educators.

On these branches, buds unfurl and burst into leaf to form the overarching, verdant Canopy layer. The unfurling symbolises the learning and each leaf symbolises knowledge or skill that has been achieved. This is where the magic really happens as children grow, develop and thrive.

We love trees so much at Canopy that we have partnered with Ecologi to plant a tree per month for every child who attends a Canopy Children’s nursery.

Inclusivity

At Canopy we pride ourselves on being fully inclusive and actively celebrate diversity. We are experienced at providing personalised routines for children with specialist needs.

We always start with the child, get to know them and help them feel settled and comfortable and then we work with parents/carers and external advisors to create an individual plan to help your child thrive.

Never Be Average

If you’re content with an average nursery then Canopy is not for you. Nothing about your child is average, they are unique, special and individual and we support and encourage each child to be the best version of themselves.

Canopy Magic

Every moment is an opportunity for a child to experience or encounter something magical.

At Canopy we harness this magic by:

  • Understanding each child and encouraging them to follow their own interests
  • Creating environments & opportunities that inspire awe and wonder
  • Seeking and highlighting the fun and delight in everything we do

Our role is to enable, capture & celebrate these magic moments in a child’s early years

A Partnership

We understand the many challenges facing parents as they juggle workloads and family life. Whether you wish to establish successful routines, learn about healthy nutrition, manage challenging behaviours or start potty training, our staff are there to help and support you.

We work to build strong relationships with parents, where they feel involved and listened to, because this is fundamental to understanding each child and helping them reach their full potential.

‘Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul’

Friedrich Froebel

‘The quality of teaching is inspirational and highly responsive to all children’s needs. Staff plan meticulously using what they know about the children. They expertly adapt activities to ensure that all children remain highly absorbed in their learning’
